Heather lives with her grandmother and newborn son Adam who is 2 months old. Heather’s parents were divorced. She never really knew her father because her parents divorced when she was very young. Heather basically raised herself and her younger brother.
Heather came to Pre-test for our program on 5/26/22. Heather stated the reason she wanted to enter our program was, “I wanted to go to college but high school wasn’t for me.” She dropped out of high school because of her truancy and the fact that she had to pay a fine. Heather found out about our GED program from a previous student in the program.
Heather had numerous challenges while participating in our program. She was 7 months pregnant and was anxious to get her GED as soon as possible. She also faced the challenge of being able to get to class. She lived far away from PA CareerLink®, and with the price of gas and a baby coming, it put a strain on her financially. Also, her mode of transportation was not reliable. Heather chose Reasoning through Language Arts as the first to study and passed successfully before the end of June. Heather gave birth to her son on 7/7/22. She only took a couple of weeks off and then was back in the classroom ready to tackle her last 3 subjects. She chose Social Studies as her next subject, but this proved to be another challenge. She actually had to take the test twice before she was able to pass it. Within the month of August, she was able to pass her last two subjects. She graduated on August 31, 2022, finally obtaining her GED!
While in the GED Program, Heather was also able to achieve her Green Clean certification all while working as a hostess at the Brass Buckle Mexican Restaurant in Conyngham, PA.
Heather felt that she was very supported by the Equus Staff. She stated, “They helped me by supporting me.” Heather would like to thank the following people, “My boyfriend, Adam, for supporting me and getting me into the GED Program. I would also like to thank my mom and step-dad for not giving up on me and supporting me through everything I do.”
Heather’s future plans include raising her son and going to college. She is enrolled at Luzerne County Community College and is scheduled to start in January. She’s not sure what major she would like to declare but is studying General Education courses. For now, she will continue to work as a hostess at the Brass Buckle Mexican Restaurant. With Heather obtaining her GED and enrolling in college, she has taken the first steps to determine her future, which is bright for her and her son.
